Keith's 1985 Z28 (Project HOJ)
It was April 2001.  A young man sits at home with a periodical in his hand.  As he leafs through the
publication, he unsuspectingly comes across
something that will change his life forever.  The
publication:
The Auto Locator.  The object: a 1985 Camaro Z28.

The next day, with checkbook in hand, he and his best friend/mentor/evil alter ego, go to
investigate the find. It was a little worn, a little torn, and looking for a good home.  It was complete,
minus the intermediate pipe on the exhaust, and ran.  A V8, 5-speed car with no T-tops to add
chassis flex and leak. All it needed was a water pump, Pennsylvania inspection, and the driver to
grow a
mullet.  The price was right.  After looking over the car for about ten minutes, hearing it run,
and finding the words
"Hooked On Jesus" and "Stone Cold Junky" on the rear of the car, they both
knew that this could be the basis for a perfect project car.  The check was written and ?Project
HOJ? was born.

I was elated with the beast.  It was not much to look at, but all the better.  A little clean up work and
the car could be a prefect runner.  After removing a
1985 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE from the garage,
HOJ was brought into the shop and her transformation would begin.

When I made the purchase, the idea was to get the car past Pennsylvania inspection, replace the
water pump and drive it.  As money and time allowed I would modify it.  Well that didn?t last long.

As all of you car people know, when dealing with project cars, one thing always leads to another.  A
much more involved teardown occurred and now HOJ is getting ready to hit the streets again.

When the car hits the street again, almost every suspension piece will have been modified,
replaced, or reconditioned.  The 305 V8 will have been
rebuilt, and stuffed with a little stoudter
cam.  The open differential/drum brake rearend will have been jettisoned in favor of a
posi-traction
equipped Borg-Warner 9-bolt with disc brakes on either end of it.  In my opinion, perfect driver will
have been created.

The following is a list of parts that have been used on our build-up:

Suspension:
PST Poly-Graphite bushings and end links
KYB shocks
Eibach Pro-Kit Springs
Square Tubular Lower Control Arms
Spohn LCA relocation brackets
Boxed Track Bar

Due to the absolutely massive size of the stock sway bars, they were retained.

Engine:
Stock rebuild with new valve job done on the heads and a little lumpier cam to tickle the valve train.
Flowmaster exhaust will also help expel the spent gases.

Drivetrain:
Borg-Warner 9 bolt posi from a 1988 WS-6 Trans-Am with a 3.23 gear.

The above is just the beginning of the build-up.  As with all project cars, they are never finished
until they are sold.  Everything that was installed was just to get the car on the road and serve as a
nice basis for future enhancements.  Driveability and reliability were critical requirements of the
project, as was cost.  However, I think with the equipment installed, the car will be equally happy on
the street and on the track.  Only time will tell though
